Renting a car (or, "hiring an auto") in South Africa and touring the country independently is an excellent vacation option.

South Africa is one of the few African countries where the road are well maintained. This means that you can easily tour the country on during your South African holiday in a normal rented car, no need for a 4x4!

Petrol (gas) is readily available at reasonable intervals, and most stations are open 24hours. Most rental vehicles can be collected and returned to all airports, but there are branches of the car rental agencies available in towns as well.
